My first week as a food delivery rider for Deliveroo

I've officially completed a full week (Week 7) of food delivery riding for Deliveroo, from Feb 15 to Feb 20, 2022. Here's a summary my thoughts.

  1. I'm really impressed with the Deliveroo app. Not sure if it is because the Foodpanda Roadrunner app has set such a low bar that any app that doesn't go blank at random times gets an A. What I liked about the Deliveroo app is the following:
    • Clean and simple main screen - just a button that says "Go online", and with a heat map of the area. You can change your zone easily, and what's great is that when you swipe up you get to see upcoming fee boosts - this helps in making quick decisions on when to go online.
    • The Earnings tab shows very clearly your day's, week's and month's earnings, though I was a little confused with the use of "orders". Stacked orders are counted as 1 order, with X orders in it, so I'm still not sure if a stacked order with two pickups from the same restaurant count as 1 order or 2 orders?
    • When at the restaurant you can do a hard press on the order and the order number will fill the screen. This is to aid when communicating the order number to the restaurant.
    • Overall I like the simplicity of the app. No app issues so far for me.
  2. Somehow I always end up in the Bukit Timah area. The distances of each delivery I was assigned to are definitely longer than what I've been doing for Foodpanda. On average I cycle for about 2.7km per delivery, and that's not counting the distance I traveled to get from the previous customer location to the new restaurant. Though I'm not complaining about the long distances, I'm not a fan of the Bukit Timah area because of the large junctions, one way streets, and hilly roads. What's more, after each shift I had to ride at least 20 to 30 min back home.
  3. There is no penalty for rejecting orders, which is a luxury coming from the Foodpanda platform, where you get penalise for rejecting orders and sometimes due to safety reasons, like heavy loads. For Deliveroo, you just indicate the reason why you rejected the order. I like that.
  4. I've been tracking the Pay Per Hour (PPH) and Pay Per Delivery (PPD) rates and so far it looks like Deliveroo is first with average of $18.54 per hour and $9.03 per delivery. The chart below shows an average in the rates from all the platforms I've done so far. I will keep monitoring.

  5. I feel a little calmer delivering for Deliveroo I think because there's no long wait at McDonald's, unreasonable heavy loads from Pandamarts, and randomly putting riders on break. It just feels more democratic compared to Foodpanda.

So those are my initial thoughts. I'm thinking of trying out different zones in the coming months, with both Foodpanda and Deliveroo. More updates soon. Be fun, be crazy, love life.

Deliveroo Rider Kit

I got my Deliveroo Rider Kit today. Time to plan how to achieve my first month's incentive!

I really like the rain jacket, the top and helmet was "meh", and the thermal bag looks gynormous, though it does look sturdy and high-quality. The only thing I'm going to be using is the jacket. Thermal bag will be a backup.

Happy Friday!

Track your food delivery performance using Google Sheets and Datastudio (FREE)

I created a way to help fellow food delivery riders to track their earnings and performance. It is totally free and all you need is a Google account, some knowledge of Google Sheets and Google Datastudio.

Let's get started.

First, here are the metrics that I wish to track

  • Pay per hour (PPH)
  • Pay per delivery (PPD)
  • Pay per distance (PPK) - this is optional as it needs manual intervention.
I would also like to know at any given time period
  • Total payout
  • Total deliveries
  • Total distance - only shown if you add the distance traveled manually.
  • Week with highest deliveries
All the raw data can be obtained from your rider app, regardless of platform, Foodpanda, Grab or Deliveroo.

Step 1: Create a blank spreadsheet with three tabs, "Shifts", "Weeks" and "Distance".

Go to https://sheets.google.com and sign in with your Google account. As you may already know, almost all the food delivery companies measure performance in intervals of weeks. The Shifts tab will be used to record the raw data and the Weeks tab used to aggregate the raw data into a weekly summary. The Distance tab is optional if you would also like to record the distance traveled between deliveries. I've embedded a template below for you to download.

πŸ“Œ LINK TO SPREADSHEET (please go to File --> Make a copy to get your copy)

Step 2: Enter data.

Enter data from your app to the yellow-coloured columns. For the other coloured columns just copy from the previous cells and the formulas associated with those cells will be replicated.

Step 3: Link your sheets to Google Datastudio.

Go to https://datastudio.google.com and sign in with your Google account. If you are not familiar with this tool, don't worry, just make a copy of the template below.

To make a copy do this:
  1. From the top right, click on Share --> Make a copy
  2. Link to your own copy of the spreadsheets mentioned in steps 1 and 2.
The data on the performance dashboard is pretty self-explanatory, and you can adjust the time range from the top right dropdown date picker.

Let me know what you think and if this is useful for you.

Just had my booster shot, can’t deliver for at least a week!

πŸ’‰ Today is officially the third day after my booster shot. I’ll be stuck at home for at least a week. Fortunately the body aches and fever only lasted a day or two, but let’s just be cautious. If all goes well I should be out delivering by the 15th.

Stay inspired and have as much fun as you can, ok?

Finally a Deliveroo Rider

Deliveroo Logo It “only” took like 3 months on their waiting list to be approved as a Deliveroo rider. Never thought it would take that long. But, I'm in. So look out for some insights about this platform.

One unique feature that Deliveroo has is the ability of assigning a substitute to help you in your delivery. I find that quite interesting, though currently I don't have a need for this. Yet.

❤️ Bernie

Also here’s the new rider incentive that I’m going to aim for. Wish me luck!
